Congratulations to Pascal’s Pulverisers (Graham, Mario, Bianca and Pascal) for winning the Super Dooper Social Squash League.

Also a special thank-you to Des, Jorg and Bernd!

Des handed over the reigns in March 2008 after 23 years as chairman. During that time he organised the coastal open every year. From leading Welsh war songs in the bar to coaching many juniors, Des has been the foundation that the SFC Squash Club is now building on. We want to acknowledge his incredible achievement and thankless efforts and look forward to his return to the squash court when his shoulder permits.

If there’s one job that is less acknowledged than the chairman of a club, it has to be the chairman’s wife or husband. And in this case, Christine not only supported her husband’s commitment to the squash club but became actively involved as club secretary - if you can’t beat ‘em join ‘em.

Jorg was Des’s right-hand man and the kindly face behind the fearsome beard (fearsome if you haven’t paid your entry fee at the coastal open, that is). Jorg has also worked long, hard and without credit beside Des and Christine for about 8 years and we’d like to thank him for his effort and hope, now he has more free time, he’ll be playing even more squash.

Many thanks to Bernd who served as treasurer and is an active member and contributor to the club.

A big thank you should also go to the players who all - with the odd awol exception - contributed to making the league a success and paving the way for future, larger events like the CLUB CHAMPS in October and the INTER-CLUB CHAMPS in November. With so many keen players and the start of a junior programme the future of squash in Swakop looks set for a massive revival.

And of course, the committee and helpers need to pat themselves on the back for an event well-organised and a job well done.
