Namibia Closed 2008

Don’t be fooled by that title, the Namibia Closed Squash Championships 2008 is open to all players currently residing in Namibia.

The tournament will be played in Windhoek over the weekend of 25 - 27 July. We would like to see the SFC Squash Club represented by as many of its players as possible for what is always a fun and rewarding weekend of squash and festivity.

We will arrange transport and affordable accommodation and the competition is open to all levels of play.

The entry sheet is on the notice board at the courts. If you need more information, just ask.

Top 16 Invitational

SFC Squash Club Steals the Show

For the first time in ages, Swakopmunders dominated a Windhoek squash
tournament. And this, my friends, is just the beginning.

Last weekend (that would be 20 June, if you must know) the Wanderers
Club organised a prestigious top 16 invitational tournament.
Representing the SFC Squash Club were Luke Allen, Jacques Steenkamp,
Ian Rowett and Andree Steyn - yes ladies, Andree played her first
tournament and therein lies a story.

Arriving as an unsuspecting spectator, Andree was drafted in to the
main ladies event by the rather persistent tournament organiser Adri
Lambert. Someone had dropped out and if you’ve ever organised a
tournament, you’ll know how that wreaks havoc on your draw. Andree’s
second game was a cliffhanging, nail-biting, cat-and-dog fight, which
she lost 13-11 in the fifth. Andree won her next too matches - every
bit as exciting - to finish a respectable 13th.

Another success story was Luke. Toppling the 5th seeded Archie Botha in
the first round with a thunderous 3-0, Luke secured his place in the
top half of the draw. Losing in the second, Luke went to win his third
and fourth matches to finish 5th.

Jacques was mid-battle in the semi-final with Walvis Bay’s Tyc
Kakehongo when injury struck in his favour. Jacques was trailing 2-1
and the fourth game was on a knife’s edge at 8-9 when Tyc hit the deck
with a cry of anguish and a firm clasp on his hamstring. A tremendous
battle was developing and the crowd was disappointed to see its
premature end.

And then came the final between Jacques and Ian. Check the newspapers
for details of that one.

A wonderful weekend away with some good squash, excellent hospitality
as always and a chance to buy a few things. And we’re doing it all over
again next month. The Namibian Closed Champs starts 19 July in Windhoek
and the SFC Squash club is going to be an even bigger force to be
reckoned with. The tournament is open to all so enter at the courts or contact the committee.

Final results of the Top 16 Invitational Tournament, 21 July 2008
Men:
Ian Rowett - 1st
Jacques Steenkamp - 2nd
Luke Allen - 5th

Women:
Andree Steyn - 13th

July is going to be a busy month

Social League.
This starts on 1 July and we still have space for a few more players to sign up. Hurry though because we can only accommodate a maximum of 20 players and you don’t want to be reserve now do you. The format is going to be fun, for those new to the concept, here’s an outline:

First, we make the teams:
» We take the list of entrants and rank them in order of ability
» Then we take the top four players and put them as the number 1 players in each of the teams A, B, C and D
» Then we take the next four players and put them as the number 2 players in teams A, B, C and D
» And so on until we have four teams of approximately equal strength
» That means YOU PLAY AGAINST PEOPLE OF SIMILAR SKILL

Then we play the squash:
» On the first night, team A plays team B and team C plays team D
» The next week team A plays team C and team B plays team D
» And so until all teams have played each other twice i.e. 6 weeks
» The winning team is the one that has accumulated the most points

Each week a different team will be “hosts” and each team will have a captain whose job it is to ensure all players are available and find reserves if any of their team members can’t play.

The cost is $40 per person, which goes towards lights and prizes.

The league night will be Tuesdays from 5.30pm onwards on BOTH courts starting 1 July.

New Members.
The SFC Squash Club would like to welcome all new members to the club - we’d list you all by name but that would take too long. I’d say that joining is the best thing you’ve done for yourselves all year; the second best thing you can do is to join the Social League where you’ll play other hackers and maybe enjoy a nice beer or two afterwards. And if you don’t play in the social league you can always come and watch and remember, Fridays are always social nights.

T-Shirts.
Thanks for your votes, the clear winner was the black Tee with Ascent of Man strip on it. Now you need to tell us what size and how many you want. Yep, that means another sheet at the courts.

Carnival.
There are still spaces available if you want to do your civic duty behind the bar. Put your name and available times on the sheet provided at the SFC Main Bar notice board.

Other stuff.
We are trying out an organic telephone booking system with Nickanor and he’s proving keen and able. This is a good thing.
With the increased activity at the courts, peak times are now full on most nights so we’re going to adjust the start times to get another convenient session in. The available slots will soon be: 4:30 - 5:15 - 6:00 - 6:45 - 7:30.
While we’ve seen a marked improvement in the shower situation, we’re far from done. Work on this will continue until our high standards are achieved.

Social League to get a Facelift
